An Inauspicious Anniversary

I was recently reminded by my "Bush Countdown" calendar of something that happened two years ago today ... the (in)famous rant on the "intertubes" by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Lunatic, AK). By the way, at the time he was the Chairman of Senate Commerce Committee which has jurisdiction over internet "net neutrality." Fortunately, after the 2006 election, this wingnut was ousted as Chairman, but still remains as ranking member. He is currently under investigation (on multiple counts) for bribery and corruption charges (along with several other members of the Alaska delegation), is facing an unusually competitive (for AK) race for re-election. With any luck, the good people of Alaska will wake up and get this embarrassingly corrupt Senate member out of office, sparing us any further of his many insane antics.

Here's an excerpt of his rant on the Senate floor, June 28, 2006.
"I just the other day got, an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. ... The Internet is not something you just dump something on, it's not a truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled, and if they are filled when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."
Absolutely insane, yet sadly hysterical. That's our Ted!
You can listen to the entire rant here on Youtube. And Here's Jon Stewart's hilarious take on it on The Daily Show on July 12, 2006.

I'm not quite sure how one might "celebrate" this anniversary, but I guess I'm contributing my part to the "tubes" with this post ... "Enjoy!"

Hi IVG.

I have to admit that as anniversaries go this one is pretty much out there. I thought Jon Stewart's take on it was hilarious, to paraphrase you. :)

Stewart was basically telling the truth when he said Stevens didn't know Jack Sh*t about computers or the internet. Sad really since he is on the regulatory board.

Oh I forgot to add. Don't work too hard, and you start taking it a little more easy. The amount of hours you are putting in does not make for a good life.

Take care

Tubes!

Gotta love people who speak with great authority on subjects they know nothing about. Mrs. Fetched's dad is getting into that a lot lately; the muddle from Faux news doesn't always get inserted quite properly. I've taken to throwing up my hands and saying, "if you really believe that, there's no sense in trying to discuss this."

I love that techno remix; alas, the page with the MP3 is gone so I can't post it.

Hey there FM,
As one of the (many) more absurd outbursts from Stevens, et. al., I couldn't pass this one up, especially since my calendar so kindly reminded me. :-) With any luck, this particular slimeball will lose not only his, but his shirt, given all the dirty dealings he's had with various bribers and con-men. Stewart's take is a classic, IMO!

Howdy FAR,
Yep, gotta love (well, not really!) those people ... and I know about in-laws who go on rants. I was totally taken aback by Fernymoss' dad a while when I was praising how compact fluorescent bulbs were such great energy savers. He went off on a tear about how they cause cancer and totally refused to even consider them (even though they have a traditional fluorescent fixture in their kitchen). Then came the lecture on "global warming is fake" ... man, I regretted bringing that up. Guess I won't be loaning them An Inconvenient Truth any time now! We're perplexed because he claims to be so eco and nature friendly, but refuses to believe the ample evidence before his eyes. We just don't even try to go there ...

I saw that remix there but didn't listen to it, guess I should have it it's gone now!
